code greenSubmission guidelines

code blue To qualify, you must submit a new, previously unpublished fanfic. It's all right to show it to just a few friends or beta-readers, but your fic cannot have been publically posted anywhere on the web prior to submission to this contest. In the case of fics over a certain length, they can be considered eligible so long as not more than 5,000 words have been published previously. Only completed works can be submitted.

code blue You do NOT need to be a previously hosted author at Scimitar Smile in order to participate in this contest. New authors are welcomed and encouraged. Entries for this contest will not be required to adhere to a theme, but if authors wish to have a prompt to consider, the theme for this contest is: Final transmutation.

code blue To submit to the contest, send your fic as a plain text or plain html* file to Scimitar Smile's email address, musokamaru@scimitarsmile.com by 11:59 PM August 31, 2006. In the body of your email, include a header with the following information:

1. Your username

2. Your email

3. Your LJ name (if applicable) or your hosted URL (if applicable)

4. The word count of your fic

5. The title of your fic

6. The rating (please use the Scimitar Smile rating system of GA-MA)

7. Any special warnings, including episode, chapter, or movie spoilers

8. The pairing information. (Please make sure you have read all about the pairing awards before you decide this! If you want your fic to be considered for the 'best new pairing' award, make sure to note here that this is your first time writing this pairing.)

9. A single line from your fic that you feel best represents it. (If you do not choose one of your own, the contest mods will choose one for you!)

Submissions will be stripped of their identifying information (the first four) and placed up on the Green Lion page of Scimitar Smile as they arrive.

code blue A single author cannot enter more than one fic in each category; they can enter one fic in each category, for a maximum of two fics. A single fic cannot receive more than three awards.

code blue Please submit final-draft quality fics only. If a story has not been adequately edited, it will be returned to the author so that spelling/grammar issues may be addressed. Every fic should be on equal footing with its coompetition.

The webmaster also reserves the right to reject any fic which fails to meet this criteria, or which for any other reason (plagiarism, trolling, lack of relation to the FMA series) would be rendered invalid.

*Plain .txt or plain .html ONLY! Do not send .doc or .rtf files, do not use Microsoft word or any other translation program to format your HTML! If your fic is not in plain text or plain HTML, it will be sent back until the format is corrected.

code greenJudging and prize information

Judging will be done by a panel of volunteer judges. Category awards and 'best in show' will be decided by the judges, but there will also be the opportunity for readers to vote for their favorite, and a webmaster's award will be given in addition to these.

code redThe normal prize will be an amazon.com gift certificate worth $15... in other words, equivalent to the cost and shipping of one volume of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga.

code redThe grand prize will be an amazon.com gift certificate worth $25... in other words, equivalent to the cost and shipping of one DVD of the Fullmetal Alchemist anime.

code redWinners may also opt to take a Livejournal.com gift certificate of equal value.

On top of from these three awards, the contest will divide into two categories: long and short fanfics. Fics 10,000 words long and over will be considered long fics; fics 9,999 words or less are considered short fics. Within each category, the judges will give two awards.

code purple The first will be an award for 'best action/adventure.' Whichever fic in the category the judges think has the most exciting action, the most original concept, the best crafted plot, and the most thrilling adventure will receive the 'best action/adventure' award.

code purple The second will be an award given for 'best new pairing.' New pairing is based on whether the submitting author has ever written for this pairing before. If you make a note in your pairing section that this is a new pairing for you, then your fic can be considered for the 'best new pairing' award.' We have no way of 100% verifying or enforcing whether this is true, but we're counting on everyone to get into the spirit of the contest and try something new!

Remember, both of these awards will be given to fics in both the long and short categories. In other words, if there are fewer fics in the longer category, then each fic has a better chance of winning one of the two awards in that category than if there are a lot of fics in the shorter category.

All fics will automatically be considered for best in show, for webmaster's choice, and will be put up for vote for the reader's choice. All entries in all categories, whether or not they win, will be permanently hosted on Scimitar Smile on the contest homepage.

code green If you're curious about the original Green Lion contest, you can find some of the entries on the 2004 Spring Challenge page, as well as in individual authors' pages around the site.
